Match Reports - 20th March 2004

| What an exciting morning of football! The Eagles overtook the Falcons at the top of the "Birds of Prey" league, showing how important it is to have a full squad, as the Falcons defence, having conceded only one goal in the first 4 games, now let in four. The return fixture in Week 7 is sure to be very keenly contested. Meanwhile the Jaguars kept their fourth clean sheet as they overcame the Cougars in the "Big Cats" league. |

| Kestrels 0 Hawks 4 Report 1 The Hawks came out with winning in mind today. Thanks to new boy Tim they seemed more focused. Keaton scored then Tim came in with another two. The Kestrels seemed to be suffering but gave a good game getting in with good clean tackles. However, they could not seem to hit the target. Just as it all looked over in came Michael with a penalty to make the final score 4-0 to the Hawks. Report 2 It had to come. After some impressive displays this season, the Hawks grabbed their first ever win and in some style. A competitive first half and a good defensive display by the Kestrels kept the scoreline down to 1-0. Early in the second half, the Kestrels had a good chance to equalise but just failed to hit the target. The Hawks, playing well and clearly confident, scored two further goals and then a handball in the Kestrels penalty area allowed the Hawks to finish the game in style with a thumping penalty. |
Next up the Hawks found their scoring touch, while keeping another clean sheet to record their first victory and move above the Kestrels in the table. I think the second half of the season could see a lot more changes in both league tables. The Leopards beat the Lions to avenge the defeat in the "Birds of Prey" league, and keep ahead of the Jaguars. |
| Cheetahs 4 Tigers 5 An end to end thriller that almost saw the Cheetahs grab their first points of the season against the reigning champions and this season's league leaders. The Cheetahs appeared to take the Tigers by surprise. After a disappointing start to their season they played with some confidence and quickly found gaps in the Tigers defence. They went one, then two, then three nil up. The Tigers pulled one back but the Cheetahs broke again and at half-time they led by 4-1. During the interval Kevin, the Tigers manager, gave his players the full Sir Alex Ferguson "hair dryer" treatment and they started strongly. They had the wind behind their backs and for long periods the Cheetahs were unable to get the ball out of their own half. Goals followed and that combined with dubious time keeping on behalf of the referee allowed the Tigers to draw level. Just as it seemed points would be shared the first mistake in the Cheetahs defence allowed the Tigers to grab the winner. |
In the final games, the Kites beat the Ospreys to draw level with them on points, but stayed below them on goal difference. Perhaps Trevor should have checked the table before deciding to settle for a 3 goal margin! In the "Big Cats" league, something momentous was happening - the Cheetahs, having found the net only once in four games, were leading the Tigers 4-1 at half-time. If it had stayed that way, the Tigers would have dropped to 3rd place in the table. Kevin's half-time talk must have struck a chord, as playing with a strengthening wind behind them, the Tigers attacked relentlessly in the second half and got the goals they needed to stay on top. |
| Next week the Tigers face the Jaguars, and a Jaguars victory would certainly shake up the top half of the league table. After seeing the Tigers concede as many goals in the first half today as in their previous four matches, who knows what might happen? |
